Gun River Hunting Retriever Training Workshop June 28th, 2008

This workshop is designed for dogs, puppies, and owners that have some or no
experience. We will address the progression of retriever training from
birth through the trained retrieve and into basic marking. This workshop
is aimed to help the novice trainer train their own dog. This workshop will
cover basic training and actual field experience including land and water.
We will have bird and water introductions. Dogs must have current
vaccinations and puppies (4 months of age and older) are welcome with their
vaccination series complete. Each dog will be evaluated for current skills,
given recommendations and assignments for growth and improvement. As a

At Gun River Labs & Training we offer an assortment of services catering to the special needs of dog owners and their canine friends. Our services now include:

Puppy parenting classes: The new puppy owner is given instructions on beginning puppy training, as well as caring for and socializing a pup. Natural dog behavior is fully discussed and we try to help the owner avoid the negative side of dog ownership. Classes are done individually.

Private consultations with families and their dog: We begin by analyzing the dog's behavior and problems that the owner is having. We discuss and take into consideration the breed, genetic influences, diet, and veterinary history; as well as normal canine behavior. A plan is then developed in order that the owners' goals may be achieved.

Puppy camp: Approved pups of all breeds, 6 months old up to 11 months of age are enrolled into camp for 1 month and stay here during that time. A program is designed for each pup based on their age and maturity. Some of the things taught here, in addition to basic obedience, are crate training, house training (if needed) and socialization with people, other dogs, and cats. The pup will be familiar with having their nails trimmed, ears cleaned, and teeth examined.

Private classes for dog and owner: These classes are for people that choose to train their dog themselves and need assistance. Our job here is to train the owner. In addition to basic obedience, we will also assist with hunting training for Retriever breeds.

New pup, no time? Let us do the work! This program is designed for people that want a particular pup and do not have the time or the knowledge to begin. Also, this is perfect for people that have to go out of town for an extended time and have a young pup at home. We will take healthy pups as young as 8 weeks of age (after 1 week of isolation and a veterinary exam) and do the early training, nurturing, and socialization. Included in this program is house training, crate training, extensive physical handling of the pup, socialization, and lots of love. The owner is included with visitation and an understanding of what is being done with the pup and why. When the owner feels that he/she is ready to take over, we work with the owners extensively to prepare them for a smooth transition. After the pup is home we continue as a support system. The goal is that the owner and the pup avoid the pitfalls of puppydom, as well as future problems.

Dog school: For approved dogs 1 year of age and older, we have a 6 week obedience program where the dog resides here on our grounds. Included in this program, we address special needs for the owner as well as thorough handling of the dog. This means that the dog will allow nails to be trimmed, ears cleaned, and teeth examined. The owner is encouraged to come here and work with us extensively during the last week or two. Our goal here is that when the dog leaves here with their owner, it leaves with a new attitude and a new respect for the owner.

Retriever Hunting School: For approved retrievers we offer a gun dog program. Each dog is evaluated and we develop a program that is geared for the owners own hunting needs. Obedience is the foundation.

Obesity problems and/or conditioning: Is your dog out of shape and or too fat? We can help with our TLC program. Each dog is assessed and the individual needs addressed. We will diet and exercise the dog until it is manageable for the owner to continue. We try to involve the client and try to teach them why diet and exercise is SO important for a quality life for their friend.

Pre-hunting and conditioning camp: Camp is during the month of September. Camp consists of diet, exercise, and brushing up on existent training skills. We will work on your specific needs as a hunter and physically condition your dog for the upcoming season.

Hunting Retriever Workshops: In the spring we offer hunting retriever workshops for the hunter that wants to train his or her own dog. These workshops are geared for the owner to understand how to train their dogs and how to put a solid foundation on the dog. Workshops can be with a dog or audit only. Limited spaces available. (email for info.)

Gun River has trained numerous hunt test dogs, and titled them in the Junior, Senior and Master categories. We have a reserve Jam, a Jam in the Qualifying and a Derby WIN! We have trained dogs to CD's and one to a CDX title in obedience.
Our retirees include a yellow male with a CD, MH, with a Field Trial Derby win and a black female with a CDX and SH. The dog with the Derby win which is of primarily field breeding also has a number of conformation ribbons.

Stud service is offered to approved bitches.

In addition to training we are responsible Labrador Retriever breeders, committed to breeding quality not quantity. Our pups are available to select owners. All of our breeding stock is cleared by O.F.A. and C.E.R.F. Our breedings include pedigrees of field trial champions, titled hunting dogs, titled obedience dogs and show champions. It is our commitment to breed dogs that are good examples of the Labrador Retriever standard. This means that our goal is to breed classic, good looking, nice working, stylish retrievers with excellent dispositions and high degrees of trainability. We want a dog that is sound and able to stand up to the tests in the field and be a friend and livable companion at home.
